Glass plate photograph (ambrotype?) in leather bound wooden case from Valparaíso, Chile. Original in Matthew Wyneken’s possession, obtained in Nov/Dec 1997 from Ruth Armitage.

The photographic technique was common in the US around 1850/60, but it might have still been around in Chile later. Ruth does not know who these people are (not even if they are Wynekens?). The Chilean Wynekens say they cannot be Gustav W and Elsa Finger, but maybe the man is Gustav’s brother. There is a good deal of resemblance between the man pictured here and the portrait of the elder Gustav Eduard Amallo Wyneken, so it seems to be a member of the family. Another possibility would be that it is a picture of the elder Gustav and only the case is from Chile. However, the man in the picture looks younger than the elder Gustav would have been in the 1850’s or 1860’s. If this is one of the elder Gustav’s sons, then the picture would have to have been taken in the 1880’s or 1890’s.
