Misc. Notes
According to
[36]:
- [Nine miles from Shelbyville, on Bull Creekt, Kentucky], Benjamin Vancleave and Daniel Boone had made a settlement in early days and were closely connected in their hunting add trapping experiences, and the history of that day mentions Grandfather Vancleave in connection with the famous Kentucky pioneer.
- In the fall of 1824, Benjamin Vancleave came to Montgomery county and settled eight mlles south of Crawfordsville, where he secured seven hundred acres of land, and here his death occurred about the year 1852, his widow surtiving him until 1871
MPW - 06.10.25, I have found no first name for this
Matthias Mount Vancleave’s father. This is the information I found in
[36]:
At this place [Bull Creek, Kentucky, nine miles from Shelbyville]
Benjamin Vancleave and Daniel Boone had made a settlement in early days and were closely connected in their hunting add trapping experiences, and the history of that day mentions Grandfather Vancleave [i.e., Benjamin Vancleave] in connection with the famous Kentucky pioneer. The son of this Benjamin Vancleave was the father of our subject [i.e.,
Matthias Mount Vancleave], and his mother was
Mary Mount. the daughter of
Mathias Mount.
MPW: 06.10.25, after a quick search, I have not been able to find a well-documented connection between
Matthias Mount Vancleave and his alleged grandfather,
Benjamin Vancleave. This does not mean that Benjamin was definitley not Matthias Mount’s grandfather, just that more research needs to be done to confirm this hypothesis.
Find a Grave lists a Benjamin Van Cleave (1741-1819) who bought land from Daniel Boone’s brother, Squire in 1797 -
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/148518907/benjamin-van_cleave. However, this person’s death year of 1819 doesn’t jive with the infomation in Misc. Notes that this current Benjamin Vancleave moved to Montgomery County in 1824. This would seem to indicate that the connection to Daniel Boone stated in the previious paragraph might be more family legend rather than factual.
The following information is from ChatGPT in Oct 2025, and thus presumably refers to a different Benjamin Van Cleave than the one related to the Vancleaves in this family file:
“Benjamin Van Cleave had a family relationship with Daniel Boone through his brother, Squire Boone Jr., who sold Benjamin Van Cleave land. Van Cleave's wife, Ruth Munson Van Cleave, had a brother named Eliaseph Munson. Benjamin Van Cleave's name also appears on tax records with Samuel and Eliaseph Munson in Rowan County, NC, around the same time Daniel Boone's brother, Squire Boone Jr., was active in the area.”
MPW - 02.10.25: I'm adding names and basic dates based on pages in Find a Grave without looking in detail whether the family connections are well documented. It would be good if a later researcher would do the work to confirm that these relationships can be documented.
