Misc. Notes
Immigrated 1881 and according to 1920 census naturalized.
[11]MPW: She would have been about 11 when she immigrated if she was born in 1870. If she was born in 1865, she would have been 16. It seems that her parent remained in the UK, so she must have either traveled alone, with relatives, or with someone else. See Research notes for a discussion about her apparently early marriage in 1885.
The mysterious date of their marriage.
In the 1910 census it says that the couple had been married for 18 years.
[46] That would mean they were married in 1892. This marriage dates actually is a pertty good match for the birth year of their first child (Mar 1892), although this would mean that the child had been conceived out of wedlock.
Their marriage certificate, on the other hand, gives their date of marriage as 16 Sep 1885. This has a number of problems:
- Their first child would have been born 6 1/2 years later.
- Emily, who was born in Oct 1869, would have been 14 years and 11 months old when she married. That’s awfully young.
MPW: What do we do with this information? I decided to just document all of this and leave it to future reserachers to try to figure it out. The possibilities as I see it are:
- The estimated year of marriage (1892) based on the census is correct, and the first (known) child was conceived out of wedlock, and the marriage certificate was for a different couple.
- They were really married in 1885 as recorded in the marriage certificate. Based especially on the unusualness of Emily’s maiden name, Stoodly, which is documented in other records, and on the repeated mentioning of middle initial “J” for bother persons in numerous record: I believe the pair in the marriage certificate were the parents of the descendants we are researching. It is also of interest to note that the marriage certificate is from the state of New York, which is the documented birth state for both of the couple. Except for some mentions of England for Emily, which might be explained from the fact that her parents were from England.
> I believe Emily must have emigrated to the US on her own since both of her parents seem to have died in England. That means it might have been advantageous for her to marry at an early age to provide her with some security.
14.10.25 - Important update:
[9, pg. 321] lists her birth year as 1865. That makes her 20 in the marriage year of 1885, which would have been more reasonable. Still, it is currently impossible to say which birth date was correct.
