Harney’s granddaughter, Cindy, says:
[5]- He was in the navy and served in a submarine.
- He died of tuberculosis. He had been sent to a sanatorium and died there.
- He did a lot of writing in the sanatorium but it was all burned when he died because they thought that tuberculosis was transmittable that way.
According to

- Harney contracted tuberculosis
- he was sent to the sanatorium at Livermore for treatment
MPW: This must have been Arroyo Del Valle Sanatorium
- he lived there for five years, during which time he developed a literary talent and did a lot of writing
MPW: Thus he must have entered that sanitarium in 1932
- his writings were burned after his death because of quarantine restrictions
- his two daughters were able to visit him only a few times, but his son never had a chance to meet his father
